FONDATION VASARELY - Aix-en-Provence
19 September - 30 October 2008

Victor Vasarely (1906-1997) is internationally recognised as one of giants of 20th century art. He is the acknowledged leader of the Op art movement, and his innovations in colour and optical illusion, and in the democratisation of art, have had a profound influence on contemporary art and design.

The Victor Vasarely exhibition is without doubt the most significant project that the OPW and Donegal County Council have collaborated on to date. A huge debt of gratitude is owed to the collective talents of Adrian Kelly, curator of the Glebe House & Gallery, and John M. Cunningham, curator of the Regional Cultural Centre. Not only have they endeavoured to bring the Vasarely exhibition to Ireland, they have succeeded in coordinating an international tour which will see the exhibition travel to the Fondation Vasarely (Aix-en-Provence, France) and to the Museum Vasarely (Pécs, Hungary), later this year.

This trans-national project could not have been realised without the personal and profession commitment of so many. We would particularly like to extend our appreciation to H.E. Yvon Roe D’Albert, The French Ambassador to Ireland: H.E. Ferenc Jári, The Hungarian Ambassador to Ireland: Dr. Józef Sárkány, The Vasarely Museum (Pécs, Hungary): M. Xavier Huertas, Foundation Vasarely (Aix-en-Provence, France): M. Pierre Vasarely (Association pour la défense et la promotion de l’oeuvre de Vasarely) : Madame Denise René (Galerie Denise René, Paris, France) and to the various private lenders.
